The impacts of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred have left residents of Currumbin Valley, Tallebudgera Valley, Mudgeeraba, Reedy Creek and surrounding areas with prolonged telecommunications outages, once again exposing flaws in our telecommunications infrastructure and network systems on the Gold Coast.
In severe weather events, reliable communication is essential - not just to access critical information and updates from emergency services and other authorities but for families checking in on loved ones and communities coordinating recovery efforts.
Understandably, many people in these commonly-affected areas of the Gold Coast are feeling isolated and frustrated.
As the community independent candidate for McPherson, I am committed to ensuring that residents of our electorate have access to essential telecommunications now and when the next serious weather event strikes.
We are calling on the Federal Government to take urgent action to strengthen telecommunications infrastructure against all weather events including:
- Ensuring reliable backup power for all mobile towers
- Increasing system redundancy to improve network stability and prevent widespread outages
- Fixing long standing coverage issues in areas like Tallebudgera Valley, Currumbin Valley and Mudgeeraba.
