The Southern Gold Coast is home to one of the most important remaining populations of koalas in Queensland - and therefore in the world. Loopholes in Koala protections at federal, state and local government are glaring, despite being classed as endangered at both a state and national level. Our Gold Coast koalas are at significant risk.
Positive, yet piecemeal, recent announcements include an overpass across the Gold Coast Highway, some support for the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital, and near completion of an underground tunnel below the M1 at Tallebudgera Valley. Buts there are gaps in overpasses and habitat, and dedicated Wildcare volunteers, who provide day and night rescue and rehabilitation for sick and injured koalas, have little or no support.
In the aftermath of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital admitted 253 wildlife patients in just three days - 4x times more than the regular intake. Disaster relief is urgently needed for wildlife carers and hospital staff to support local wildlife, including koalas.
Piecemeal responses are not enough! We need modernised national nature law reforms (which have been stalled by the major parties for seven years) and a comprehensive approach to protect koalas.
We are asking for the Australian Government to fund a Southern Gold Coast Koala Program to:
- Identify and secure vital connections and crossings across the Burleigh to Springbrook koala corridor to ensure safe movement for koalas across the landscape.
- Restore and regenerate degraded habitats through a network of volunteer-led koala tree planting projects.
- Support wildlife carers by improving facilities and providing financial assistance to cover the substantial costs of caring for our native wildlife, particularly during natural disasters and recovery efforts.
- Fund the new research and education wing of the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital and continue its funding that is due to lapse this year.
- Recognise and assist landholders with koalas on their property in maintaining and enhancing koala habitat, as well as installing koala-friendly fencing.
- Strengthen and enforce koala protection laws to prevent the destruction of koala habitat.
We must protect our endangered koala population.
