Fixing the Housing Crisis

Housing is a human right. Everyone deserves a safe and secure place to call home - but right now, a growing number of people across the Gold Coast are locked out of the housing market, struggling with sky-rocketing rents or dealing with short leases and constant uncertainty. Teachers, nurses, retail workers, and young people are being priced out of the communities they love - threatening the very fabric of our Gold Coast community.

Being a renter on the southern Gold Coast, I understand the growing pressure people are under just to keep a roof over their heads.

The housing crisis has been decades in the making and the major parties got us into this situation.

We need urgent action across all levels of Government to fix the housing crisis.  As you independent for McPherson, I’ll push for practical solutions including:

  • Investment in social and affordable housing so we can build more affordable homes and reduce pressure on the private rental market.
  • Making sure the southern Gold Coast gets its fair share of new affordable homes
  • Expanding shared equity programs to help more first-home buyers.
  • Increased measures to discourage land-banking, property speculation and empty houses – ensuring that housing stock is available to house people.
  • A better deal for renters: Including supporting national rental standards and stronger protections against unfair evictions.
  • Increased and better-targeted Commonwealth Rent Assistance to help the most vulnerable people in our community.
  • The creation and legislating of a National Housing and Homelessness Plan to make sure every level of government works together, with clear targets, funding and accountability.
